Toilet Leaks – Fix For Both To Be Green And To Save Money

We have had our fair share of toilet leaks in our current house.

I am reminded of them whenever I see my water bill.

Yet, if you don’t fix them as soon as you discover them you will waste your own money and waste clean water for everyone.

Item number 1 within the Water / Inside / Effort / Moderate path within Savings Grid is Fix Internal Toilet Leaks.

They are not always free to fix. If the leak is caused by the fill valve or the flapper, then you may need to purchase a replacement.

They can result is a large amount of money and clean water savings over time depending on the amount and frequency of the water leak.

Hopefully fixing a toilet leak will not become a habit; yet they may not be a one time thing over time in the same toilet.

If you haven’t done it before, they can take time. Yet once you have fixed one or two, depending on the cause of the leak you might get reasonably proficient can can do it yourself.

Replacing the Toilet Fill Valve

This happened to us recently in our main bathroom. It was an American Standard Champion 6L water saving toilet. The fill valve kept getting stuck part way up so water would continue to go, well, literally down the toilet.

I went to our local plumbing supply store and they suggested I use this, the Korky QuietFILL  toilet fill valve. It cost around $18.

The salesman showed me how to install it and it seemed like something I could do. I had seen my friend, Bennett, replace both a fill valve and the complex flapper of these American Standard Champion toilets before so I thought I could do this myself.

Hopefully this and the next article will help you try to do this on your own and save money from having  to call a plumber.

Here were all the tools I needed:

The sponge was to soak up the water I could not otherwise get out of the toilet tank. The wrench was to remove the part called the mounting nut underneath the toilet tank  which held the current defective fill valve inside.

Steps To Replace Defective Toilet Fill Valve

Step 1. Turn off the water supply leading to the toilet tank.

Step 2. Flush the toilet to both ensure you actually did Step 1 properly and no more water enters the tank. As well, this will empty much of the water in the tank.

Step 3. Flush the toilet again. You want to get rid of as much of the water in the tank as possible this way.

Step 4. Use the sponge to get rid of the excess water which remains in the tank.

Step 5. Unscrew the mounting nut underneath the tank which secures the defective fill valve inside. For me, I had to use the wrench.

Step 6. Remove the defective fill valve.

Step 7. Insert the new fill valve. Follow the instructions for the fill valve you use, paying particular attention to the water fill line and its placement inside the toilet tank.

Step 8. Secure the new fill valve, in our case the Korky QuietFILL fill valve, to the tank by using the mounting nut on the portion of the fill vavle sticking out of the bottom of the tank.

Step 9. Connect the refill tube, again, according to the instructions of the fill valve you are installing,  to the fill valve.

Step 10. Connect the water supply line to the new fill valve.

Step 11. Turn on just a bit the water supply and check for any leaks outside the toilet tank.

Step 12. Once no leaks have been detected and water is starting to go into the toilet tank, open up the water supply a little more at a time to again check for any leaks.

Step 13. Don’t move. Stay there until your new fill valve stops filling the tank with water.

Step 14. Test flush. Ensure the water supply is open as much as you intend to have it open this time and ensure that the water stops at the water line needed by your toilet tank and its flush valve overflow tube.

Step 15. Smile. You did it. You will start saving clean water and money from going down the toilet because you successfully fixed your internal water leak….assuming it was the fill valve which was the cause.

I hope that helps.
